Recognizing Different Roof Types

Many different roof styles are constructed atop homes. Knowing which style you have will aid you in selecting materials and a contractor when your roof needs replacement. The most popular types f residential roofs are gambrel, mansard, flat, slope, hip, salt box, skillion and green roofs. Obviously the last type is a variation on flat roofs and are comprised of living greenery. Green roofs, however, must have the correct underlayments and water barriers to support the weight of soil, plants and even small trees.

Gambrel and mansard roofs have steep sloes and valleys, making them somewhat susceptible to leaks from ice dams as they age. Flat roofs have almost no pitch. Because they tend to accumulate debris and water they are best suited for dry areas. Slope roofs refer to any type that is tilted. Hie roofs have four slopes joined together at the top. Skillion roofs make a triangle and are generally used in conjunction with other roof types and are often found in houses with several living levels. Hop over to this webpage for more details.
